How are you doing it now?
I think the fastest might be SAVLIB/RSTLIB . However, with a 17TB schema
you'll also need another sh'load of disk space for the save file or
virtual image catalog (or several tapes).

I would think this method wouldn't generate near as many I/O's or journal
transactions as a plethora of INSERTS with subselects.

You could do the indexes later. This way you'd at least get a warm
feeling and "think" the job was done,..., until you tried to use the first
index which was in the long slow process of rebuilding itself. I believe
it was John Lennon who said that perception is 99% of reality.
