Way back when, I managed a dozen Unix boxes - NCR Towers running System V. Static would zap the RS-232 boards that drove the Wyse-50 terminals and cause a "panic trap" which is a kernel error and a hard stop. Not a good thing when you're running a high-volume pharmacy. Had to install anti-static mats in the switch room.

No carpeting in our raised floor room. Back in the consulting days I did
have some sites I recommended antistatic mats. And one place I wouldn't
touch a keyboard without first touching the terminal with a metal edged
ruler, the shock was that bad.
However not applicable to our situation.
