Much good info, several replies here

As my head is starting to spin, forgive me if I repeat myself :)

Larry, me, and a couple others keep cards/tape devices on hand so we can
make these types of migrations work.
Call for help?

Interesting option.

Hey, what is the new tape device on the P8? Will it work on the P6?

And there's that possibility, but unlikely as they are far apart
geographically.

If you are using VIOS don't use a tape image, use a DVD image so the
virtual
optical will work.

Given the systems are far apart, I would only do a SAVSYS to optical,
then
the balance to tape.

I have not researched inherent limit of virtual optical but I do like that
idea of backing everything
up and transmitting an image then installing raw from the image. I've
never done that, but it really works?
Again, is there a limit to the size of the virt opt image?

And again, if, say, I installed 7.3 and came to the data center with
image(s) of my 7.1 server, where are the collision points in restoring to
the higher level?
Just SAVSECDTA and the various libraries used on the system? Restore QGPL
to some other name and gingerly move individual objects across?

Or is it better to install from the saved image as 7.1 and do an upgrade?
