FWIW: You could also use set or values:

exec sql
set :tinyURL = systools.httpgetclob ('http://tinyurl.com/api-create.php?url=http://twitter.com/hashtag/ibmi', '');

or

exec sql
values(systools.httpgetclob ('http://tinyurl.com/api-create.php?url=http://twitter.com/hashtag/ibmi', '')) into :tinyURL;
