We just use UNC instead of a mapped drive.

I put the Java client on a file share and point the client desktop shortcut to that. Nothing to install or upgrade on the individual PCs.
The only requirement is that they have a mapped drive letter, and pretty much every place has that already. Upgrading to the next version is as simple as unzipping it into the same directory and everyone uses the new version in the morning.
