The way it was explained to me (and the contact from IBM tried to
delicately walk the tightrope on not making IBM or any of it's employees
look less than stellar) was that when you open a hardware incident the
initial contact will look up your 7 digit serial number, for example
21-12345. This initial number may have the grunt warranty information
which may only show your warranty level of service. And that is likely
only 8x5. But many people purchase extra support, and maintenance to kick
in after the warranty expires. This may only be the 5 digit number. For
example only the 12345 out of the the original 21-12345. The initial
contact often doesn't look it up under this 5 digit number causing you
much pain as you contact IBM, your BP, etc wanting to know why you only
have 8x5 support.
Support may route you to entitlement and they often quickly figure this
out.
