This is what IBM support had to say when I quizzed them on why this PTF
fixed it:

"The delta between the code level you were at and the current code level
includes fixes for the following APARs: SE66188 SE65577 SE65318
None of which have symptoms that we can directly match to your problem but
we likely would have had to have taken job traces to know if they matched
or not if the problem had anything to do with heap overflow or MCH errors,
often those messages aren't displayed in the joblog and require job tracing
to unmask."
