I think in today's world using an email appliance like you're doing for
the actual message exchange is paramount to making sure stuff exchanges
cleanly.


The IBM i SMTP client is pretty basic. It mostly handles socket-to-socket
(client-to-server) communications (it sends email). That's all that most
shops need.

Regarding email appliances (i.e. spam filtering, anti-virus protection),
that may apply to a sending entity in some cases, but it generally applies
more to receiving entities.
