I had to answer this one - yes the math still works
- perhaps even little things like does MMDDYY * 10000.01 = YYMMDD generate
an error now?

The small systems out there may be old or even ancient.
S36 code (RPGII) is still compiling, with possible minor changes
Certainly the attachable hardware has changed, but converting has not really
been that hard if wanting to keep the same basic code (the exception might
be WSU screens and DFU apps, OV400)..

One part of this discussion has not been mentioned.
In the 90's I worked mostly in retail. One cust had hundreds of systems
around the country.
One requirement - the internet could go down and the store stayed open. A
lot of business owners think that way. We sold even more stuff in hurricane
hit areas because the stores could open up if not demolished (and also
figured out how to run a store in the parking lot..).

Think of an application running on i that is just a 2U rack piece (guessing
size) with an ip address. Why does it need to be more complicated than that?

IBM's done this before with plug n play systems. Even in current retail
there is still a lot of "i" looking green screens (which can easily be made
into web interface).

That's so many releases ago that I'm sure there are risks besides the
obvious ANZOBJCVN issues. Any number of things including:
- imbedded OV/400 stuff
- all the show stopping changes to CPYTOIMPF and CPYFRMIMPF
- hardware no longer supported like numerous tape drives, optical juke
boxes, fax equipment, IXS cards
- perhaps even little things like does MMDDYY * 10000.01 = YYMMDD generate
an error now?
- back and forth rules when someone uses 'SELECT * into :ExtDS'
That's a lot of Memo To Users to catch up on.

One problem when you get so far behind is that many people start to forget
the pains from intermediate upgrades and just remember a few huge ones (like
ANZOBJCVN).

As long as they have observability (or they have source code) is there
something else that would cause a problem?

Just curious.

They were still using v4r3 and old COBOL and RPG. As long as those
programs
migrate without much problems they could use a smaller, cooler machine.

the key words, which may very well disqualify the action is "migrate
without much problems"...

I concur. yesterday I went to see a new customer that had a dead AS400

prime candidate por the IBMini that the IT Jungle article mentions. They

The customer base exists, whether they finally make it or not is a
different tune. Even the express edition machines are hard to sell in
this
country, especially to those kind of shops that are so small and have so
little need for iron that the only reason for upgrading is a hardware
failure or an SSL algorithm mismatch...

Let me tell you about my first hardware upgrade. In '03 we replaced a

Will the new system be right for me? Maybe, maybe not. But for those
people in this discussion with 5 or less users, almost certainly.

I guess just curious. A lot of people think people will just gobble
stuff
up but it's not right for them. You're right, I know it's not right
for
me. I just wondered if people thought it would be right for people
like
you and whether or not you thought it really would be right for you.
