Both JDBCR4 and ArdGate will allow you to access MS SQL from RPG. Here are some differences based on my experience.

ArdGate is easier to use. Once set up, you just use embedded SQL. There are some limitations though. The biggest in my opinion is that you have to disconnect DB2 to access SQL Server. It does allow interactive SQL.

Assuming you run JDBCR4 within the same job as your RPG, you'll have the JVM startup time for each job. After that, JDBCR4 is faster than ArdGate (not enough for a human to notice for single read/writes), but it would take a lot of I/O to make up for JVM startup.
