I ran HOST without specifying a DNS server. I also used copy-and-paste to protect against typos. Interesting, I have to use the fully-qualified name, which I don't for anything else.
FWIW, here's the back story:
I had the printer in my office for setup. I then moved it to its final home, which is a different DHCP subnet. At that point, nothing could see the printer. I went to our network admin, and he did some voodoo. After flushing the PC DNS, the printer answered a PING from his PC.
