I had to read this a few times but, maybe, this is based on obsolete
information?
With newer versions of the OS they support three part naming. For example
select ... from SQLSERVER.myschema.mytable ...
update mydb2server.myschema.mytable ...

And you can even do
insert into mydb2server.myschema.mytable as
(select ... from mysqlserver.myschema.mytable)

Granted, you need something like Ardgate to be able to do the
from mysqlserver.myschema.mytable
stuff.

I just ran this on an IBM i 7.3 lpar:
create table qtemp.mytable as
(select * from gdihq.erplxf.rco) with data
Table MYTABLE created in QTEMP.

gdihq is a different lpar.
