Our internal systems that talk to each other our fine.
It's the 50+ external servers that our production environment depends on
that our down and not working.

Your internal systems shouldn't be dependant on external DNS in the first
place.

But I don't think they every thought that DNS could fail due to DOS
attacks.

DNS is a necessary evil, but if IPs were used instead, production
would still be up.

And according to one of the big tent speakers at ZendCon this week we
can look forward to 100,000,000,000 IoT devices on line by 2020. Yes
that is MANY for every man woman and child on the planet.

*I* will add that the vast majority of them will be run by crappy
buggy or at the least insecure software and hooked together in a
botnet capable of such a massive DDOS attack as to disable even the
ability to tell them to stop. Literally potential to take down the entire

internet there.

We have already seen multiple Tb level DDOS attacks. Yes that's a Terabit.
That's yuuuuuuuge!

And yet another speaker warned against code practices that took too
long because your competition is working faster than you. Not a word
about coding for security even in the session on security.

On a slightly brighter note the number of CVEs is down over the last
two years for the first time in a decade. That's good but on the chart
I didn't see 'thermostats' 'refrigerators' 'light bulbs' etc as
categories of affected devices....
