Oh yeah those bigger boxes had some serious blowers. I remember powering
up a 595 in a brand new data center. Those were in extra wide racks and
there had to be 10 blowers in there several of which were 220v AC Powered
12" diameter units. They would, as you mention, go to full tilt at power on
and you could feel the blast from all the way across the room.

The CE Commented that those dual 1.5" thick power cords with 5" Locking
collar ends were for more than amperage they were also the auxiliary tie
down straps!

Yessir that's they way they start.

I have had much fun stating: "Please put your seats and tray tables
in the up and locked position. The captain says we are cleared for
takeoff." Just before the fans light off. In the best one the guy
who had to shadow us in the DC heard me but didn't get it. When the
fans lit up he started wandering the DC looking for 'that noise'.
When he finally figure out it was the Power8 he connected what I said
and 'got the joke'!

Fired it back up and it reminded me how it sounds when it starts up.

Like

a slow crescendo to a very loud harmonic howl of some very fast fans...

then after a few minutes quiets down, with a slow decrescendo to a

whisper

(much quieter than my old 515).

Is that what these things should sound like when starting up? :)
