Cute but which of the list of links that animation returns is the one
that answered James' question?

The first is a hardware link that discusses the components of the front
panel, the cables that connect it, and the various bezels and whatnot.
Nothing there about how to power down the system from the front panel.
In addition the link is to POWER5 hardware while he has POWER6.

The second is a link to the System Builder for Power6. A very nice book
indeed bug again nothing in there about how to actually use the front
panel.

Link three is another IBM link but this time to a Sales Manual link.
Good luck getting information from the sales manual on how to operate
the system.

Link four is closer as it is the first link to actually return any
information on how to utilize the control panel for something. Sadly it
talks only about how to return the FSP addresses which aren't so useful
when everything else in the DC has already been powered down to save,
well, Power.

Link 5 is how to physically replace the control panel of the server
when the Power is already off. Again, not really useful.

Link 6 finally is a link to a PDF document that describes option 8 at
least which is one option for bringing the server down in some situation.

The remaining links are additional mishits for the search phrase.

NONE of the links on that page describe the use of the Power Push Button.

Look, thanks for playing but if you're going to post a snarky response
at least make sure it clearly and unequivocally answers the OPs question.

If *I* was in a hurry to power a system down because it was super hot or
because the UPS was about to take leave, I would:

1) Set the system mode to Manual
- Up arrow to 2, then Enter
- Up arrow to A, B, or D with M
- Enter until back to 02.
2) Press the Power (White) button until I saw 0?
3) Release and then press the Power button again to confirm that I wand
the power off.

** NOT RECOMMENDED *** if you have other options but it is still
better than letting the power simply fail.

What's the safest way to shut down an E4A with only the physical front
panel available?

We had another power failure, I'd already shut down (to shed the load) a
Linux box with the only convenient terminal emulator, and the aging
batteries in the UPS gave out before I could initiate a controlled
power-down.

Thankfully, everything IPL'd just fine after the power was restored.
