Actually, we WERE in that trap, about 20 years ago: restrictions on OS revisions, and it wouldn't work at all under Security 40. I got us out of that trap by re-implementing everything that was hack-based, changing it to use documented public APIs. When V3R6 came out, I had to accelerate that process by an order of magnitude. We've only had one hiccup since then (in an installer program, if I remember right) and it was easy enough to deal with.
