Sue,

Is there anything that this method doesn't save/restore? the VMLibrary,
file-backed devices (i've seen them in production best practices
not-withstanding)...

I am at VIOS 2.2.3.3.
I am trying to upgrade to 2.2.3.4

Here is what I do to "upgrade" VIOS .... it's more like a
scratch install, but it works

- FTP the 2 DVDs for VIOS install to an IBM i LPAR
- Use the HMC capability to load the images to the HMC.
- Run the command viosbr -backup -file lparname on the VIOS LPAR
- Use FTP to send the the backup to an IBM i LPAR.
- ftp i_lpar
- cd /directory_for_viosbr_files
- lcd cfgbackups
- bin
- put lparmname.tar.gz
- quit
- Shutdown the VIOS LPAR
- Now start it from the HMC and use the HMC's capability to
install VIOS

When the install is complete, I reverse the process for the
viosbr file to bring it back to the VIOS LPAR and I run

viosbr -restore -file lparname.tar.gz

Works every time
