On June 21, 1988 I was responsible for the AS/400 introduction at my branch office. (This was when IBM had "systems engineers" and "branch offices".)

We had a morning announcement event in a nice hotel, and then we had to rush our AS/400 Model B10 back to the office for a System/36 User Group meeting. A salesman and I loaded the B10 into his pickup truck and we drove off, not troubling to secure the AS/400 for the two mile journey.

The pickup had one of those bed liners which are quite slippery, so when we stopped at a traffic light the B10 slid the entire length of the bed and thumped into the back of the cab with a loud bang. We got back to the branch office without further mishap, carried the B10 into the briefing center, and plugged it in.

This was my first product launch, and I suspected there weren't many spare parts available for the only AS/400 in New Hampshire, so I got on my knees in a prayerful attitude and pressed the power button. The little AS/400 started right up - my first clue that this was one rugged machine.
