In those times a serial change i suppose implied modifying a processor
board or backplane (i'm not sure where the serial lived on those times).
Nowadays, changing the serial is just a matter of IBM programming (not sure
if they DO it, but they could) a VPD card and inputing their magic numbers
for the FSP to enable the functions.
Be aware though that even if you get IBM to set the serial to whatever you
want, the QMODEL and the like still change...

Best Regards,

I do not have a clue about moving serial numbers around.

I seem to recall issues years ago with model changes that
were called "upgrades" but were really box swaps and
folks needed the serial number to be moved. I do not
remember how that worked.

I am thinking that if they're willing to swap out a box for one that runs
the V5R2 to 6.1 range then they're going to end up with a new serial
number. Does IBM still sell boxes that span V5R2 to 6.1? That's limited
to: 9406-800, 810, 825, 870, 890. Wouldn't an IBM upgrade be the only
way to retain serial number?
