I am thinking that if they're willing to swap out a box for one that runs
the V5R2 to 6.1 range then they're going to end up with a new serial
number. Does IBM still sell boxes that span V5R2 to 6.1? That's limited
to: 9406-800, 810, 825, 870, 890. Wouldn't an IBM upgrade be the only
way to retain serial number?

Well, IBM won't even sell you an "upgrade" FROM any of those above models
to a later model, so I sure as heck doubt you're going to get an upgrade
TO one of those models. Therefore, serial number change.
