I have done these side by sides, so the more complex the system is the side
by side method still an option. I have never done with BRMS in the mix,
would that change the approach at all. How about the I on I now.
Migrating systems and OS with 1 layer is one thing, but now with multiple
layers, hmc, linux etc etc. I just got burned the the other day saving
storage spaces in my 21 save, never again. I will save them later to
another tape and do it while active.

Again, perhaps I was spreading FUD. But I get the impression that the OP
was hoping to do it on their own. They had hardware that would run 7.1.
They weren't a 24x7 casino with no HA machine. I just think they would
have reduced risk by upgrading the existing machine first.

I know myself and others on this list do these mixed mode migrations all
the time. In fact, I have two of my guys at two different accounts doing
this right now as I speak. This is "normal" when you have accounts with
170s and 270s upgrading to a Power7 machine. There are many people whose
machines can't upgrade past V5R4, and their new machine can only run 6.1
or 7.1.

If your BP isn't proficient in doing these & discussing the process, then
most likely they aren't certified, and they don't do these enough.

If you do it right, there isn't a problem. It's not about Fear,
Uncertainty, and Doubt. It's about experience. We don't try to 'scare'
out customers, we try to show them the experience they have so that they
know they are in good hands.

When you do enough of these they are very easy, in fact
if you really understand backup/recovery they make perfect sense.

I agree-- Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt. Yarns ago, it was believed that
if anyone in the IT department of an IBM shop even hinted that another
vendor's machines might be looked at, "F,U, and D" would be spread by the
IBM sales rep, SE, and any other IBM personnel-- usually to upper
management-- to basically discredit the person looking around, because
"You can never get fired for choosing IBM."
