We had an issue with iSeries Access sessions not starting-- the session window would open, but the session would not start. At the bottom, just above where the "Session successfully started" message normally appears, we got "bA?" meaning the connection is an NVT-Mode connection.

Sessions that had been up and running and merely signed off were still able to sign back on and work.

We learned that we probably would have been able to connect using VT100 (= NVT-Mode)

This affected both local and remote users.

The issue was "A TCP endpoint control block contained a "dangling" pointer to
another object that had been freed. When this endpoint was
reused for a new server socket, a reference to the dangling
pointer caused an exception. Two paths that could incorrectly
leave this pointer set have been identified and have been
corrected. Additionally, the pointer will be cleared when a TCP
endpoint is freed to ensure it doesn't cause any other problems."

We were referred to http://www-912.ibm.com/s_dir/slkbase.nsf/ibmscdirect/0B06AE91CFAD0212862
5749E0047C7BD (recommended TELNET PTFs) to prevent future occurrences.

If I remember correctly, there was no work-around; fortunately we still have an APPC link between systems and people were able to use Work Station Pass-Through.

We applied the recommended PTFs and IPLd the system. Fortunately, it was our test system and we were able to sneak in the IPL.
