Yes that will work and work reasonably well. The one thing that you cannot do is operate the control panel completely through that connection. You can get a virtual control panel on the PC while the system is running however during an IPL the control panel will be gone for a time and you are 'in the dark' during that time. You cannot power the system UP with the Virtual Control Panel.

A better solution is to purchase an HMC and connect that to your POWER5. With that you can power the system up and down, view the SRC codes all the way through an IPL and have complete visibility of the system even if it fails. Personally I would prefer the HMC solution about 5 to one over the LAN console.
