or in the poor man's HMC version of that, hook up the HMC1 or HMC2
port to a dedicated eth on the lan console and enter the ASMI for
power up/power down/error led shutdown.
but with CR3 rack mounted HMC's selling for 400 usd on ebay, i would buy it...

Best regards,

Roberto

Yes that will work and work reasonably well. The one thing that you
cannot do is operate the control panel completely through that
connection. You can get a virtual control panel on the PC while the
system is running however during an IPL the control panel will be gone
for a time and you are 'in the dark' during that time. You cannot power
the system UP with the Virtual Control Panel.

A better solution is to purchase an HMC and connect that to your
POWER5.  With that you can power the system up and down, view the SRC
codes all the way through an IPL and have complete visibility of the
system even if it fails.  Personally I would prefer the HMC solution
about 5 to one over the LAN console.

We have a 520 Power 5 as a backup machine in a remote data center.  I'd
like to be able to remotely access the console. I want to do system
maintenance (PTFs&  upgrades) without needing to involve the data center
staff.

I believe we need to remove the twinax console and set up a PC as a LAN
console.  PC needs to be running at least iSeries Access 6.

Then I could do a remote desktop to that PC and I'd be running the console.

Am I on the right track?

by googling "lan console power5 520"
