This media is created with LICPGM menu option 40. As you suspect, I maintain a partition with *NOTHING on it except all LPPs (I call it 'GOLD') I PTF it current periodically using a network based Image Catalog so I don't even need to FTP in the PTFs. Then I either do option 40 directly to tape (it's actually faster on a lot of small systems to upgrade from tape) or I write to an Image Catalog and then FTP them to my laptop for delivery.

This gets you the most current level of everything and you don't even need to do PTFs after the upgrade.

The upgrade itself is a bit different, you must understand the process but if you do, it's a win win for everyone - fewer issues (PTFs are already there), less upgrade time (PTFs are already there) No need to scramble for media or wonder if what you have is new enough.

Larry brings an interesting perspective. If you are having some
consultant coming in to install/upgrade you and he already has customized
media that has the requisite level of PTF's that's a whole different
ballgame. That's his customized respin. :-)

How does one generate that? Doing a full system save to image catalogs
and burning that to DVD's? Does one have a custom lpar that has just the
OS and all licensed programs for doing just this?
