Hi Rob

I got all that; there seemed to be a school of thought that you could
not easily get to the same level as a re-spin and that just seemed
counter-intuitive to me. That's been cleared up now.

The re-spins are pretty handy when building a new system for a
customer - makes loading the cume a lot quicker, apart from the
obvious side-effect of ensuring hardware compatability for more recent
hardware.

Jack,  You're welcome.

Evan, Respins really do not bring anything to the table, over and above
cumes and groups, for an installation running that level of the OS
already.  For example, if you are running 7.1 I would not overlay it with
a new respin of 7.1.  You would be better served by applying the latest
cume and groups.  Which, you would have to do anyway after applying that
respin!  Now, if they came out with 7.1.1 I might but that's different
than a respin.
Where a respin shines is generating a new lpar, or a new system.  A new
system may have hardware requirements that require the new respin or you
couldn't even get to the point to apply a cume after putting on the old
spin.  A new lpar may save steps because, frankly, some of those
"technology refresh" ptf's are a PITA to apply.  Rolling a refresh into a
respin is a Godsend and greatly simplifies the process.

Rob, I believe that link you have is the one that I need or should be
using,
thanks!!

Evan, respin is what version of lic levels your running.

Yes respins, Kirk can break down what the -C and -10 are, looks like
revision C??  Is there a website that says how you can migrate systems
based
on RSE levels.  From what I was told I had 3 options to choose from, I
choose the route that would take the least amount of time.  Intermixing
power hardware and hmc controlled/non hmc controlled systems seems to
be a
mix'n'match currently on if it will work or not.

RSE  is a short way to say RS-610-E being Respin V6R1 rev E

Looks like from the Link posted earlier
http://www-947.ibm.com/systems/support/i/planning/resave/index.html

LIC respins are Alpha and SS1 are Numeric
V7R1 is currently at -C and -10
V6R1M1 is currently at -D  and -10
V6R1M0 is currently at -G and -10

Haven't heard the term RSE to describe a respin either - what does
it
stand for ? Are you sure they are the same thing ?

Respins or resaves of the OS.  Certain hardware may require that
the
LIC
be a certain level before installation.  Oh, it still may be 7.1,
but
it
may have more PTF's built into it.

Also some "technology refresh" ptf's are very comprehensive and
IBM
sometimes generates a new respin to allow you to get an
installation
done
without really having to step through some strange hoops.

Even with a new resave you should apply the latest cume and the
latest
applicable groups.

I always use the latest resave from:
