I have not tried cygwin and at this point don't have the time to, but it is intriguing.

As to MySQL yes, I am using it on IBM i for many of the open source packages that are available. Specifically SugarCRM and Joomla. I also use it in specific portions of the iDevCloud.com applications.

I have not found an editable file in the IFS that VIM did not edit properly. That said, I am usually dealing with .conf, php/html scripts, and some shell scripts.
