You didn't miss any steps. By default there is no
SystemDefault.properties. I'm not sure why IBM stuck with Java 1.4 on
5.4. I've heard you can get Java SE 6 on 5.4, but I've never tried it.

That's odd the upgraded version won't run the J9 JVM. I haven't run
into any problems running it on any box.

Just as an FYI too, it's not really considered the "32-bit" version.
It's the J9 JVM and comes in both 32-bit and 64-bit, at least on 6.1.
I've been guilty referring it as that as well, as I just found out
there was a 64-bit version. If I remember correct the HTTP admin
refers to it as "32-bit", so I could be wrong :-).
