If the console is not available, then what's the advantage of the
backup being in batch?

No need for an interactive job started on the console and running the
BRMS console mode. Therefore, no need to make sure that this job is
active and ready to run the backup.

Until V5R3, each friday we had to make sure that all was ready for a
SAVSYS on the console.
The distance between our data center and the command center is greater
than one thousand kilometers, so we had to write specific procedures
for "BRMS console mode" to be started by on site support people (when
remote console access was not possible, eg for twinax console), or by
command center (when remote console access was possible, eg for HMC or
PC using pcAnywhere).
Since V5R3, no need for such procedures and checks.

But, to avoid to be "in the dark" when the backup runs during a long
time, when there is a scheduled SAVSYS, we split the backup in two
control groups.
The first just saves the system, *IBM libraries and a couple of other
libraries and directories.
The second saves *ALLUSR and remaining directories.
Only the first makes use of a batch running in restricted state, for an
around 60 minutes maximum duration. The second runs normally in a
production state with just a couple of started subsystems, which allow
us to properly monitor the backup.
