Nothing against the trigger. They don't usually get a warm reception here although that seems to be changing.
Mostly I wanted to find out where I was wrong in my understanding of how the default values work. It may seem hard to believe but I'm the 'go to' person for SQL questions and if I didn't understand the default clause correctly I needed to figure it out.
