Well, if what Alfred says is true (there IS a 2.1.1 update due out May 15th) and IF that includes an enhancement to save directly to tape, that would make my life easier. I want the update so that I can get the media tray plugged back into the BCS (the supposed cause of my i5/OS failures is due to the media tray...)

The final notes weren't final. About two hours after the post, the blade failed again and I am back to square one. My recommendation is to avoid a blade for another 6 months to a year until the dust settles. I think the p and i folks are still getting their act together making sure all is playing nicely together.

For me, I will be plugging my 270 back in so at least I can demo some stuff at Common. It may be just a "iSeries" but at least it runs, and keeps running, when I plug it in.

Yes, once the storage and tape issues are resolved, it becomes a more viable alternative - we will look very hard at it then, I'm pretty sure.

Is it safe to assume the blade concept just isn't ready for prime time?
Generally: It is. Blades work very well. We've been using Intel blades
for quite some time, with few issues.

Now, we don't run AIX, but VIOS in general seemed kinda half-baked to
me, and the interactions with the IBM i weren't really top notch.
Especially the tape drive issue was a dealbreaker for us. But when we
replace our production 515 in 2010, we'll definitively think about a
Blade.
