Yes, once the storage and tape issues are resolved, it becomes a more viable alternative - we will look very hard at it then, I'm pretty sure.

Generally: It is. Blades work very well. We've been using Intel blades
for quite some time, with few issues.

Now, we don't run AIX, but VIOS in general seemed kinda half-baked to
me, and the interactions with the IBM i weren't really top notch.
Especially the tape drive issue was a dealbreaker for us. But when we
replace our production 515 in 2010, we'll definitively think about a
