Nick,

My recollection of Ops Console (we had one system set up with it at another company about 10 years ago) is that the PC was direct-cabled into a port in the back of the iSeries (170, I think). I, also, recall that the cable had its own part number with IBM. But maybe I'm mis-remembering.

On the other hand, the LAN Console, which we currently use here, just runs off of the network's Ethernet. It did require set up via SST in order to enable / configure it. Don't know if that can be configured via DST, but I'm guessing not because the configuration was rather complex. The reason being, of course, that you can't have just anyone on the LAN be a console, whereas the Ops Console is direct-attached so security is physical.

Cheers Lukas - I'll give this a go when I back home this weekend.

So, I'm assuming that with the manual IPL procedure I simply plug in an
ethernet cable from the 400 into my hub, it will assign an IP and then I can
telnet(?) onto it? Or is this something that requires specific software or
cross-over-ethernet cables or something?

Nick
