Thanks Pete,
I agree about the 4mm...
This machine will never be partitioned.
We did have to talk them into dumping twinax to consider the Power.
This has given them lots to consider.

Subject: RE: Power config questions

You can run either V5R4M5 or V6R1 on the Power Systems, and if you are
replacing a Adv/36, I think an M15 will have more than enough performance.

There is NO QIC on a M15 because there is no SCSI controller, only an
internal SAS controller. I don't think the current options for tape are
good enough and in my opinion IBM rushed the announcement and left the small
end customer with no viable tape alternative. This was very
short-sightedness on IBMs part, and while 4mm isn't as bad as the VXA-320
that IBM tried to stick us with a few years ago, it is a poor alternative.
If I have 200 or 300GB of data, how can I do an unattended backup?

I think a 515 with a half-height internal LTO-2 Drive (or a External LTO-3
Drive driven by an IOP and 5736) is a better option than a M15 with a 4MM
option. Biggest thing you loose with Power5 vs. Power6 is the ability to
run virtual i5/OS partitions (which can only be done on Power6). I would
imagine that IBM is working very hard to address this situation, but this
should have been thought of before announcing this machine.

LAN console is great, and gives you the ability to do remote access. We
recommend it to everyone who doesn't have an HMC. By the way, it's even
easier to configure at V6R1.

Subject: Power config questions

1. Anyone had experience w/4mm 72 gb (5907) on new Power system?
We were told no QIC on the low end (9407-M15).
2. Planning on lan console.
This machine would actually replace an old Advanced 36 (436).

3. Also, we can get V5R4M5 or 6.1 - any thoughts?
(Need to be able to install and not babysit).
