Here's another thing I noticed that might not be relevant. Or, it might be.

When I use "17" to work on the dds source member, I can put a "12" on
the window format and then an F9 which shows the screen as an additional
format; it shows exactly as I want. However if I put the "12" on the
screen format and then use F9 to add the window as an additional format,
it says its added it but I can't see it.

This is not a major deal, but I am trying to make the screen look less
primitive.

Given what you say above I suspect that the window format occupies some of the space used by the screen format. Make sure that both the window and the screen start and end on completely separate lines (including attribute bytes).
