Nick -

I _STRONGLY_ recommend that you move up to QSECURITY level 40 (at
least). QSECURITY level 30 was shown to be unsecure in 1991, and IBM
created QSECURITY level 40 about that time. After a 16 year beta
program, I can assure you it is quite ready for prime time.

When you move up, consult the Security Reference guide on making the
move from 30 to 40 (it's about two pages long), or have a professional
help you. I do know of a number of shops that just flipped the switch
and IPL'd, and everything was fine, but I would never recommend that.
When we've done this for customers it is often 1-2 days work total.

And if you software vendor tells you that there software won't run at
QSECURITY level 40, don't believe them. I've found that most vendors
that claim this simply aren't smart enough to write code that Violates
Operating System integrity.

Those vendors that are smart enough to violate OS integrity already know
that their code will not run on V6 (IBM announced this two years ago).
If your vendor's code in fact will not run at QSECURITY level 40, then
you're going to have a problem moving to the next release of the OS.

If your machine is currently at QSECURTY level 10, you can stay there
(though I recommend a thorough psychological work-up). Once you move
to
a higher QSECURITY level, you will not be able to move back.

From: rob@xxxxxxxxx

And IBM is willing to make some changes. Like, they no longer
ship
systems at level 10 security. I'm not going to try but I don't
think
you
can even drop back to that level.

It's not listed as an option on CHGSYSVAL help text, Rob. The
lowest
value
listed for QSECURITY is 20.
