There have been some previous threads where some Zebra models
support different print languages, and are not interchangeable.
Many who use RPG and may not use the external print server,
use models that support some version of ZPL.

Don,
Buy a Zebra with an external ZebraNet print server. I maintain over 40 Zebra barcode printers and they are real workhorses. None of them are under maintenance agreement even though many of them are on production lines. Unlike laser printers, I don't consider the bar code printers to have an end of life. With the correct media and ribbons, you should get a decade or two out of a Zebra "S" series printer.
If you'd like to pick my brain regarding Zebra bar code printers, feel free to call me!

I have an Intermec 4400 printer with the twinax feature. We print bar coded labels from an RPG program. This printer is at "end of life" as far as a maintenance agreement goes. The printer is failing, and I will be looking into cost effective solutions.

All ideas welcomed!
