I have held off on commenting about MySQL on the System i5 simply because
the details are so "mushy" right now. What exactly does running MySQL on
the System i5 mean? If I have to introduce a linux or Windows server then
it just lost one point off the ease of use list.

It'll run in PASE on System I, so no need for linux or windows server.
It's going to be an AIX for Power binary distribution, with custom storage
engine layer developed by IBM and built into the mySQL install package.

I agree on the "mushy" qualification. There are a lot of technical details
yet to be understood.
Announcement breathes hope though.
