I am most excited about MySQL running on a PC platform using the iSeries as
its storage engine.
MAJOR RED FLAG! If I am running enterprise business apps on my iSeries in
PHP I would not want to reach out to another Wintel machine only to have the
DB request come back to the iSeries' DB2 engine. Almost like doing a full
circle and adding a layer of failure at the same time! I am near certain
this isn't how it will work in the end, but wanted to comment on your
theory.
I have held off on commenting about MySQL on the System i5 simply because
the details are so "mushy" right now. What exactly does running MySQL on
the System i5 mean? If I have to introduce a linux or Windows server then
it just lost one point off the ease of use list.
The cool thing is that we are getting closer and closer to the iSeries being
at the front of the web server market. Just think, all those LAMP/WAMP
installs that are having troubles with viruses can easily port their apps to
a superior OS with a superior hardware expansion model. What IBM should do
is go after Yahoo and have all their sites (which run PHP) to be running on
an System i5. Then have a "Powered by System i5" logo on every page like
eBay has for Java.
I think it was Pete Helgren who stood up at COMMON opening session and asked
what IBM is going to do in the way of making it easier for vendors to get
these into the hands of customers (i.e. preload a bunch of integrated open
source software). Will be interesting to see if IBM pulls out the stoppers
as that could birth a whole new cross section of resellers!

Subject: RE: MySQL on System i
Have been doing some reading on this. Seems like one of the smartest things
that IBM has done in awhile. Surprised corporate didn't get into it and kill
it.
This just opens all kinds of options for IBM. I am most excited about MySQL
running on a PC platform using the iSeries as its storage engine.
Only question is what the performance will be using the iSeries as a storage
engine.
