Your last paragraph speaks volumes.  Not just language, but choice of OS'. 
 We "dabbled" in Linux.  We set up a pair of Domino clustered servers to 
do archiving to less expensive disk.  One server in the cluster was 
Windows, one was Linux.  Boss was hoping to cheap out on paying for a 
Windows server.  However to do that would require Linux expertise. 
Apparently no one here was willing to take it up on their own to learn 
Linux well enough to routinely support applications.  And the boss didn't 
assign someone to it and invest training in it.  We've since migrated that 
other server to Windows.  We do still have some Linux (Big TSM server on 
i5 lpar) and having to dabble in that is no big joy.
