Is the pricing value of the System i in the hardware, or in the
consistency of the platform software over decades?


It's at least partially in the workload management, both in the operating
system and in the native RPG language.  You can run a LOT more business
users on an iSeries than you can on a Windows or Unix machine, with a lot
less administration.
