re: longevity of media--  Tape wins.  As far as I know, "burn it
yourself" CDs are only good for 5 years >or so... we have tapes more
than 10 years old that are (mostly) still readable.  I 'assume' that
burn-your-own DVDs have similar life to CDs.

If CDs and DVDs are stored and handled properly, they should remain
eaily readable for 20-30+ years. Some types of both are expected to
remain stable and usable for 100-300 years. 

But the typical CDR tossed in a desk drawer, or DVD stored in a jewel
case isn't going to fare as well.
