Joe,

The thin console is a 3rd party device (neoware) about the size of a System Handbook, that requires a keyboard, mouse and display. You order it with your new System i5. It connects via ethernet cable to one of the HMC ports on the 520, and shows the green screen terminal console only. It is designed to replace the twinax console, and seems to be exactly that. The only thing that would be nice would be remote access, and at this time it does not do that. It does not require an IOA or IOP, since it plugs into the HMC port, and it is a little less expensive than a new 4746 twinax card - not sure 100% of the list price.

It has been mentioned here before, but this is the first time I have seen a real one. I have two on my desk - each with their own keyboard and mouse, and a display I switch between them.

Hope this helps,

Trevor, what's a "thin console"? And how much do they cost?

Joe

I just installed two new 520s with thin consoles. I plugged them in and
turned them on. Not too difficult.

The most difficult part was setting the IP and system name parameters to
suit the customer requirements.

Ease-of-use = 10 out of 10. And I am not a sysadmin, either.
