Backup is a bit of an issue.  Moving a tape drive between partitions can 
work, but not something I'd want to rely on, so you probably need tape 
drives for each partition.  Of course you do for a SAN too, but there is 
no savings here.

I can't comment on the SAN part of this discussion, but for backup 
purposes, we have an IBM 3583 tape library with 3 drives inside it. One 
drive is dedicated to the production partition, one is dedicated to the 
Windows server (stand alone PC), and the other is switchable between 
another low volume production partition, our Domino server, and our other 
non-production partitions. This works smoothly for our needs, and I 
believe this can still have another tape drive installed.
