"bolt on" is a generic name for any kind of "add on" 3rd party solution that really does work with your regular stuff, irrespective of what marketing or tech support have to say about it. Beware of having multiple "bolt on"s that do not talk to each other, creating "islands of computing".

For example, there are "bolt on"s for the ERP marketplace, in which it does not matter what ERP you have or what version of that ERP, the vendor has versions of their feature that "plug and play" taking at most 5 minutes to install and get it working with your data.

Similarly there are "bolt on"s for security enhancements, in which it not matter what your main software applications are, they install and do their job without messing up your main software.

However for every one "bolt on" that functions as I have described, there are a million vaporware products being touted by pimpettes that say they do the above, but really are a load of crap.

When we were still on AS/436 running M36 without OS/400, we asked every cold caller "Does this work when we are running an AS/400 without OS/400?" and 99% of the pimpettes would say this works on every version of AS/400, then we'd say we need a contract in writing from your company, so that we have zero financial obligation to you, in case you are mistaken, and 90% of the time it would turn out that they were mistaken.

Oh Great And Powerful Members Of The List,

I have been approached by a pimpette about some work in the area at a company specializing in the retail environment. One of the requirements is for "Bolt-On". I have never heard of this. Oh, sure, we can bolt stuff on all the time. Is this a retail software package? The pimpette, of course, is clueless and is reading the requirements from a spec sheet.
