Chad, Like you, I'd really prefer doing the upgrade on the old machine and then religiously following Appendix D of the Backup and Recovery Guide. However, I have did the load of LIC on the new machine from CD's and then restore everything else from the source machine. I would only do this for when both machines are on the same release, or this one time shot of a v5r3m0 source to a v5r3m5 target. Actually, I've found that some machines will not even let you IPL from tape because (and forgive me if I get this backward) the difference between "alternate IPL device" and "alternate installation device". Small mom and pop machines running internal tape cartridge drives may never notice this. But larger shops using 35xx tape drives most likely will. One advantage of preinstalling the LIC from CD is that you minimize your downtime because the installation of LIC will also initialize your disk drives. On some machines that can shave off a few hours of downtime. When you have a country full of people waiting on a 570, that is significant. This method will require that you reinstall cume, and the hiper and DB group ptf's. Rob Berendt
