RE: HMC questions

One more thing on question 1 - if you use HMC for problem reporting,
being off won't help you call home to IBM.  Obvious, yes, but I figured
I'd mention it before getting beaten about the head.  =)

Sure, leave it off.  If you use it for your system console, you'll
possibly create a white message in QSYSOPR when you disconnect.  The
caveat is this - if you have a system failure and require console, you
may have issues with reconnecting.  Not always, but if you have no
access but HMC, and the DSP01 device goes to failed and needs to be
cycled, you'll have to IPL to get it back.

Question 2;
Does anyone have the bigger (2U HMC) and is it fairly quiet in your
environment?  I may propose a change

Didn't realize they had a 2U HMC, the other one looks just a standard PC
AFAIK, and I don't think it can be racked.  They are much quieter than a
xSeries server though.

Question 3;
Has anyone found a way to deal with the noise of the HMC?

Get more stuff in your datacenter?  =) Honestly, I haven't heard the HMC
except when it turns on and goes to full-nuts for a few seconds.
Between the HVAC and the giant 7xx box in the back, can't hear a thing.
The HP servers on the other side of the room are pretty loud too.  1U
xSeries boxes are notoriously loud - since it's all ethernet-based, you
could just move the server somewhere else in the building, provided it
meets your security requirements.
