Does anyone have there systems scheduled to power down in order to run an IPL? Can anyone think of a reason why that would be necessary?

We ipl once a month, whether we need to or not.

Our oldest boxes (Jupiter the 40s, Pluto, the 200, and up until recently, Saturn the D02) are kept powered-down when not in use, but they're scheduled to power themselves up once a week to exercise the hard drives.

This exercise cycle was instituted because (1) we were occasionally having to pull hard drives on Jupiter, and give them the "IT handshake," if it was left powered down for more than a week, yet we'd also literally burned out a couple of hard drives over the years, and (2) on ultimately two separate occasions, Saturn lost its system password, and getting hold of somebody at IBM who could (and would) generate one for a box that antiquated was rather akin to pulling teeth; the exercise cycle seemed to prevent this, as the second system password loss was during a period of interruption in the exercise cycle.

Our other main boxes (Mercury the slim 170, Sirius, the two-cabinet 510) stay up almost all the time, only going down to restricted state for full backups; they only get IPLed when they start throwing "serious storage condition" alarms. Our newest box (Mars the fat 170) is too new for us to have figured out whether to keep it up continuously or only as needed, while Neptune, our 150, hasn't even been plugged in since we stopped using it as a firewall.
