It was more than that. Here is what I understand to be true. Keep in mind that my focus at COMMON is speaking, so I may have misunderstood. They announced that they were raffling off a Porsche! A fair amount of advertising and marketing made sure that everybody came. I even received an invitation by Fed-Ex on the Friday prior to COMMON with a memory stick. So the whole world showed up. They had a room suitable for 50 to 100 for premium cocktails, and they had the better part of 1000 people. It was hot and ugly. Many things went off course. Their schedules went off, and they rolled over several speakers (including a BOF that I was giving). Porsche provided a video which nobody could see because the room was too cramped. Many people missed the IBM reception (which I understand was nice), due to their reception. It turned that the "raffle" was either misrepresented by them or misconstrued by me. In fact, they raffled off a chance for six people to punch in a one in 100,000 chance to win the car. In fact they never intended to buy a car. Had anyone won the car, they would have found that it was a one year lease, and had to pay tax on the car. Furthermore, they had bought insurance to pay for the expense had anyone won (like "hole-in-one insurance"); moreover the insurance agent or a company representative was present. I think that they had good intentions, but they hurt just about everybody that touched the event, including themselves. I never found out any specifics about their product announcement. I think that this was a first class disaster for all: COMMON Attendees Speakers whose sessions it ruined Quadrant The room was too way small, and probably illegal. The company generally deceived us that there was a car to be won. IMHO, they did damage to their reputation. Please respond to Midrange Systems Technical Discussion <midrange-l@midra nge.com> Does anyone else think that Quadrant was less than fully honest about this give-away? I thought it seemed very deceptive in the way it was advertized as compared to the way it was really handled. I was going to be seriously considering their software, but now I'm wondering if I really want to do business with a company that does something like this. Thank you, Ronald L. Zimmerman I.T.
