Years ago I tried this on CISC hardware and it worked.  The drive
initially reported as failed, but a reformatting in DST fixed it.

The only difference between the PC and 400 formats is block (sector)
size.  PC scsi cards like adaptec will format with a 512 bytes per block
  and the AS400 formats with 520 or 522.
